HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE
KATHMANDU: Nepal Police today distributed three-wheel scooters to nine servicemen who were physically disabled due to injury during the decade-long insurgency.

They were honoured and gifted a three-wheeler each by Inspector General of Police Ramesh Chand Thakuri at a function in the Capital.

Servicemen whose body below the waist had become dysfunctional received the special package from the Police Welfare Trust. All of them were handicapped in the course of discharging their duty during insurgency.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Naresh Kumar Basnet from Fattepur of Saptari received the key of his scooter. Two bullets had pierced his spine in a Maoist attack in Solukhumbu.

“Since then, I have been compelled to crawl, but it’s always better late than never. Now, I’m happy. It’s safe and easy to ride.” Constable Lal Bahadur Khadka of Saptari said the gift was a boon for him and his family. “Earlier, I used to seek help from my kin to move about. Now, I can take them for a ride.” The Maoists had attacked him in Sankhuwasabha. But, SI Suryaman Nepal of Pyuthan was not satisfied. “The government should recognise our sacrifice and provide salary for life,” he said. Nepal had survived a bullet that hit his chest in Dang in 2001.

IG Thakuri said six other handicapped servicemen would benefit soon. Each three-wheeler cost Rs 150,000. Thakuri also gave away scholarship to 16 meritorious children of police officials and personnel.
