KATHMANDU, DEC 18 -
In a landmark decision, the Ministry of Home Affairs demoted Deputy Superintendent of Police Rup Kumar Neupane to Inspector. He is accused of protecting armed groups, including those behind the murder of media entrepreneur Arun Singhaniya, the chairman of Janakpur Today Publications, and others in the Tarai region.
Sources at the ministry said the stringent action against Neupane was recently taken after the police probe convicted him of protecting a controversial person named Sanjeev Jha, who has a strong nexus with armed groups in Tarai. Neupane was deputed in Dhanusha at that time.
“It is rare that a police officer is demoted, so in that sense this is a big decision,” said Police Spokesman Bigyan Raj Sharma.
“He has been punished for hobnobbing with criminals.”
In June, the ministry had suspended Neup-ane for four months in accordance with the recommendation of the Police Headquarters.
